When I first began to love God…

When I first began to love God,
I thought I’d fallen into the ocean.
But I was only on the beach.
then I entered the water,
and was thrown back onshore.
And then washed again, into the waves…
God, why did I want this love?
And what is this back and forth?

–Hafiz – The New Guide

Tender Words

Tender words we spoke
to one another
are sealed
in the secret vault of heaven.
One day like rain
They will fall to earth
and grow green
all over the world.

Judgement

Letting judgment drop. Practice accepting everything just as it is, without wishing for it to be different. The key to freedom.

The Moor

It was like church to me.
I entered it on soft foot,
Breath held like a cap in the hand.
It was quiet.
What God was there made himself felt,
Not listened to, in clean colours
That brought a moistening of the eye,
In movement of the wind over grass.
There were no prayers said. But stillness
Of the heart’s passions—that was praise
Enough; and the mind’s cession
Of its kingdom. I walked on,
Simple and poor, while the air crumbled
And broke on me generously as bread.

I wish I could show you
The Infinite Incandescence.
That has cast my brilliant image!
I wish I could show you,
When you are lonely or in darkness,
The Astonishing Light
Of your own Being!

My Brilliant Image

Be empty of worrying.
Think of who created thought!
Why do you stay in prison
When the door is so wide open?

The true Self,
being natural,
needs no practice
to be what it is.

The false self, or ego,
needs lots and lots of practices
to try and become
what it can never be.
